Local Attractions: Glacier National Park

View of clouds over Lake McDonald Glacier National Park is aptly named because of the 50 glaciers presiding in the million acre park boundaries. Glacier National Park was created in 1910, becoming the 10th National Park in the United States. It is located in the Upper Waterton Valley, which consists of a park bridging two Nations together. There are a number of resorts in Glacier National Park. Within the park boundaries, Glacier National Park lodges have been preserved over the centuries.

  Glacier Parks many acres consist of a variety of habitat, wildlife, wildflowers, ice cold lakes, glaciers, and lofty mountain ranges. It is the center of one of the largest and most intact ecosystem in North America. There are many activities to do in Glacier Park that could occupy you from a ½ day to many days.

   One of the many tourist attractions is the spectacular scenic drive on the Going-to- the Sun Road. You can view the Bird Woman Falls, or visit the Logan Pass Visitor Center where you can also hike the trail behind the Visitor Center to Hidden Lake. Here you may see some wildlife such as mountain sheep or spot a black bear or grizzly bear. If you don't want to make the drive yourself, there are excellent guided tours over this pass. There are many turnouts to stop along this drive and enjoy the scenery, which will be an experience you will always remember.

  There are two other Visitor Centers located upon entrance. Apgar Visitor Center, and St. Mary's Visitor Center, can help you locate what you need to know to become orientated to the park. There is a slide program shown throughout the day at the St. Mary's Visitor Center.

  There are over 700 miles of hiking trails, which consist of short hikes, day hikes, or backcountry hikes. There are a few self-guided walks such as the Hidden Lake hike and the Trail of the Cedars, which is wheelchair accessible. The St. Mary's Valley has the Barring Falls and St. Mary's Falls hike. Many Glacier has the Grinnell Lake or Iceberg Lake hike. These are only a few of the many hikes that visitors can enjoy. View from Logan's Pass

  Other activities for visitors include boating or swimming at St. Mary's Lake or McDonald Lake, white water rafting, canoeing, or kayaking on the Flathead River on the South and West boundary of Glacier. There are also guided horseback trips available at the Many Glacier and Lake McDonald. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and it would be worth your while to take a day and enjoy what this magnificent park has to offer you.
